Jack Brown: Music
Those Red Shoes (live -- from Folkstage)
Recorded on WFMT's Folkstage/Midnight Special -- live national broadcast Saturday, August 28, 2010. Nope, no true story here -- completely made it up. Got the Gershwin "Rhapsody in Blue" lick idea, then built out from there. Thanks to Tom Kimmel for the advice on the hook.
THOSE RED SHOES

The pool hall smelled of peanut shells and day-old beer.
My buddy turned to me and said, “Let’s get out of here.”
Across the street a sign flashed “Jazz and Blues.”
We found ourselves a table, ordered some brews,
When way across the room, what to my wandering eyes should appear?
Yeah, I saw those red shoes and I promptly forgot
About the onion rings and spicy wings that we never got.
I hear there were lots of people dancing in a smoke-filled room
While a band was up there jammin’ to a Gershwin tune.
The joint was jumpin’, the music was pumpin’,
But all I recall is those red shoes.
Those shoes led to feet, led to legs, led to Lord have mercy.
And a matching dress that fit so well, it was starting to hurt me.
I wandered by and asked if I could buy round four.
She took me by the hand, let me straight out the door.
And those red shoes took me out of the blues to a love that cured me.
Well that was ten years ago on a sultry steamy summer night.
To this day it’s the craziest thing I’ve ever done in my life.
For anyone who can’t believe my story is true,
Come over one evening for a bite and a brew
And I’ll personally introduce you to the kids and the wife.
And you’ll look her up and down
From her head to the ground
And if you’re woman or you’re man
Well you’ll quickly understand why . . .
